Legacy RuneScape Players Risk Login Blocks Without Jagex Accounts

Jagex will move all Legacy accounts for its free-to-play MMORPG RuneScape to Jagex Accounts on November 17, 2026, and players who have not upgraded will be unable to log in until they complete the one-time migration. The studio announced the date through its official RuneScape site.

What changes for players

The upgrade uses the existing account’s username or login email and password. Jagex says accounts and characters will remain safely stored if a player misses the deadline, but access will stay blocked until the upgrade is completed on a later login attempt.

Jagex says its older login system lacks modern protections. Jagex Accounts offer stronger password requirements, improved multi-factor authentication options, login and account-change notifications, and backup codes. The system launched in 2023, and Jagex says it spent three years refining it with player feedback; more than 89% of active players were already using Jagex Accounts when the announcement was published.

The character limit has also risen from 20 to 50 per Jagex Account. That capacity covers characters across Jagex’s games, including Old School RuneScape. Players who currently sign in through Steam, Apple, Google, or Game Center can keep using those methods to log in, but will need a Jagex Account to use the Launcher or some website services, such as Support.

  • Migration date: November 17, 2026.
  • Before the deadline: Jagex recommends upgrading early to avoid interruption.
  • Mac: An Apple Silicon version of the Jagex Launcher is planned for release by the end of October 2026.
  • Clients and mobile: Approved third-party clients, including RuneLite, will remain accessible through the Launcher; Jagex Accounts are also supported on mobile.

The transition does not remove access to approved clients, but it does make the Launcher and certain website features dependent on a Jagex Account for users signing in through linked platform accounts. Jagex’s account changes accompany its ongoing work across the RuneScape ecosystem.

Players can begin the upgrade with their existing login credentials before November 17 rather than wait for the login prompt after the switch. Jagex’s official migration announcement has the full account and platform details.
